Sugar Goes By 54 Other Names

If you are reading labels and still not finding sugar, it may be hiding under a name you do not recognize. Here is the list, and what to do with it.

You flipped the package over. You read the label. No sugar listed.

And yet there it is, under a different name.

Sugar shows up on ingredient labels under dozens of names. Some of them sound almost healthy. Evaporated cane juice. Fruit juice concentrate. Barley malt. Brown rice syrup. They are all still sugar.

Why this matters more than the number

Most people try to cut sugar by watching the grams. That works, up to a point. The trouble is that the grams tell you how much, not how often. When sugar is in your bread, your salad dressing, your deli turkey, and your almond milk, you can be eating it at every single meal without ever reaching for dessert.

That steady drip is what wears a body down over time. Energy that dips mid-afternoon. Cravings that feel louder than they should. Sleep that never quite lands.

The list

Here are the names to know. If you see one of these, that food has added sugar in it.

Agave nectar, barbados sugar, barley malt, barley malt syrup, beet sugar, brown sugar, buttered syrup, cane juice, cane juice crystals, cane sugar, caramel, carob syrup, castor sugar, confectioner's sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, date sugar, dehydrated cane juice, demerara sugar, dextrin, dextrose, evaporated cane juice, fructose, fruit juice, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, golden sugar, golden syrup, granulated sugar, grape sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, icing sugar, invert sugar, malt syrup, maltodextrin, maltol, maltose, mannose, molasses, muscovado, panocha, powdered sugar, raw sugar, refiner's syrup, rice syrup, saccharose, sorghum syrup, sucrose, sweet sorghum, syrup, treacle, turbinado sugar, and yellow sugar.

A shortcut that covers most of them: if a word ends in "ose," it is usually a form of sugar.

What to actually do with this

Please do not go clean out your whole pantry tonight. That is how people burn out by Thursday.

Try this instead. Pick one thing you eat almost every day. Your bread, your coffee creamer, your yogurt, your dressing. Read that one label. See what you find.

Then, if you want to swap it, swap that one. Give it a few days. Then look at the next thing.

One at a time is not a slower way to get there. It is the way that sticks.

Keep it simple: You are not trying to be perfect. You are trying to see clearly.

If you want a structured way to do this, the 30-Day Sugar Challenge inside My Vitality Compass walks you through one small action a day for a month. No shaming, no starting over if you miss a day.
